Het Steen is the first and oldest stone fortress in Antwerp located along the River Scheldt near the Former Werf Penisula. The first settlement with earth fortification was built on the Werf in the ninth century, which subsequently became a fortress. Between 1100 to 1200, a stone wall and Het Steen, one of the fortress three gatehouses were added.
